バロック美術とは、1600年～1700年初頭までの間に発展した美術様式です。

バロックとは「ゆがんだ真珠」を意味し、批判的な意味で使われていた言葉でした。

この作品には、イエス・キリストが「私についてきなさい」と、当時徴税吏だったマタイを弟子にするために召し出す場面が描かれています。
