箱根寄木細工は、神奈川県の箱根町でつくられている工芸品です。
Hakone marquetry is a craft made in Hakone-cho, Kanagawa Prefecture.

箱根町の山に生えている豊富な種類の木々のある地域だからこそ、彩りのある寄木細工が発展しました。
Colorful marquetry has developed in Hakone because of the rich variety of trees that grow in the mountains of Hakone-cho.
箱根寄木細工の特徴は、木々の緻密な色の違いを、組み合わせることで様々な模様を作り出していることです。
The characteristic of Hakone marquetry is that the trees’ precise color differences are combined to create a variety of patterns.

It expresses various patterns, including traditional Japanese patterns such as “Saya-Gata” and “Seigai-Ha”.

材料となる複数の木の板を作り出すには、木を切る角度や寸法の正確性、接着技術、そしてそれらを作り出すための工具の製作にいたるまで、長い年月の経験と熟練が必要です。
Producing the multiple wooden planks that form the material requires many years of experience and skill, from the accuracy of the angles and dimensions at which the wood is cut, to the gluing technique, and the making of the tools used to produce them.

寄木細工の技術は、平安時代から存在していたと伝えられています。
The art of marquetry is said to have existed since the Heian period.
その中でも箱根寄木細工の始まりは、江戸時代と言われています。当時、それは東海道の茶屋や温泉で売られるお土産として作られていました。
Among them, Hakone marquetry is said to have started in the Edo period. At that time, it was made as souvenirs to be sold at teahouses and hot springs on the Tokaido Highway.
