Claude Debussy was a French composer. Debussy’s music is called impressionist music.

Before Debussy, the world of classical music was based on the traditional scale progression and functional harmony, but Debussy expressed his music in a free and original way.

Debussy’s music has also influenced a wide range of genres in later generations, including jazz and pop music.

The term “Impressionism” was originally a concept that originated in the field of art.

The term gradually came to be used as a derisive term for a kind of stream of works by painters such as Monet and Renoir, as well as for works in the music industry.

Monet’s Waterlilies, for example, is characterized by its ambiguity and elusiveness.

Prior to Impressionist art, most artworks were realistic and had clear, strong outlines, but Impressionist paintings have vague outlines.

Like dotted dots, they are not clear when viewed up close, but when seen from a distance, the viewer can recognize the cohesiveness of the whole.

Debussy was a pioneer in trying to reproduce this Impressionist method of expression in music.

Before Impressionism, the classical music world was dominated by the Romanticism, which was subjective and narrative in nature.

Debussy dispensed with the Romantic expression one after another.

dispense:施行する one after another:次から次へと

He did away with the classification of major or minor keys, eliminated the contours of the sonata form, and eliminated the rules of chord progression.

As a result, Debussy’s works have innovative chords and shimmering melodic lines.

One of Debussy’s masterpieces is Arabesque Nos. 1 and 2.

Arabesque means “Arabian pattern,” and this piece has a sense of grandeur and splendor that symbolizes the permanence of ornamentation in Islamic art.

Moonlight is another of his masterpieces.

The melody, which sounds both gentle and wistful, evokes the fantastic light of the moon and is enchanting to listen to.

Finally, I present his symphonic poem, The Sea.

The cover of the score for this work features an ukiyoe print by Katsushika Hokusai, famously influenced by Japonism.

From the stillness of the waves to their great undulating movements, one can feel the ever-changing expression of the ocean.
