茶道には、「茶禅一味」という言葉があります。
In the tea ceremony, there is a saying, “Chazen Ichimi”.
これは、「茶道と禅の道は同じである」という意味になります。
This means that the Way of Tea and the Way of Zen are the same.
鎌倉時代に茶を中国大陸から輸入した人物が、栄西という臨済宗（禅宗の一つ）の僧侶だったことから、その関係が始まります。
The relationship began in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) when the person who imported tea from mainland China was a monk of the Rinzai sect (one of the Zen sects) named Eisai.
その後、珠光が墨跡を茶席に掛けるようになったことも、禅と茶道の関係を一層深めました。
Later, Shukoh began to hang ink calligraphic works at the tea ceremony, which further deepened the relationship between Zen and the tea ceremony.
「仏道」の教えである、「自利・利他」という、自らを高めて他者にも益を与えようとする道が、自利・利他円満を目標とする茶道の目標と合致したことも、関係としては大きいです。
It was also significant that the Buddha’s teachings of “self-interest and altruism,” the path of improving oneself and benefiting others, matched the goals of the tea ceremony, which aims for self-interest and altruism.
「和敬清寂」は、茶道の心得を示す標語です。
”Wa-kei-sei-jaku” is a motto that describes the spirit of the tea ceremony.
「和」は、亭主と客が互いに心を開くことを言います。
”Wa” means that the host and the guest open their hearts to each other.
「敬」は、互いに敬いあうことです。
“Kei” means to respect one another.
「清」は清らかと言う意味です。目に見える者だけでなく、心も清らかであることを指します。
“Sei” means pure. It means to be pure in mind as well as in sight.
「寂」とは、穏やかで、どんなときにも動じない心を意味します。
“Jaku” means calm and unmoved at all times.
