Vermeer was one of the most famous Dutch painters of the Baroque period.
フェルメールは、バロック時代を代表する、オランダの画家です。
Vermeer lived in the 17th century in the Netherlands, a time when trade, science, military affairs, and the arts were among the most admired in the world.
フェルメールの生きた17世紀のオランダは、貿易、科学、軍事、芸術が、世界中で最も賞賛された時期でした。

Vermeer was born in Delft, the Netherlands.
オランダのデルフトというところでフェルメールは生まれました。
Around the age of 21, he joined St. Luke’s, a guild of painters and craftsmen, and began his career as a professional painter.
21歳ごろに、画家や工芸家のギルドである「聖ルカ」に加入し、プロの画家としてのキャリアがスタートしました。
Joining St. Luke’s allowed him to take on apprentices as a master and to earn a living by selling his work.
聖ルカに入会すると、親方として弟子をとったり、作品を売って生計を立てたりすることができるようになります。

He also married a woman named Katharina. Katharina’s mother was very wealthy and gave Vermeer generous support.
また、カタリーナという女性と結婚しました。カタリーナの母親はとても裕福で、フェルメールに惜しみない援助をしました。
This enabled Vermeer to purchase lapis lazuli, which was very expensive, and to use it in his paintings.
よってフェルメールは、非常に高価だったラピスラズリを購入することができ、それを絵画に用いることができました。

One of Vermeer’s most famous works is “Girl with a Pearl Earring”.
フェルメールの代表作品に、「真珠の耳飾りの少女」があります。
