The major difference between Japanese and European castles is the extent of the castle walls.
日本とヨーロッパの城の大きな違いは、城壁の範囲です。
extent：広さ、程度
In Japanese castles, only the castle is surrounded by walls. European castles, on the other hand, surrounded entire towns with walls, forming walled cities.
日本の城は、城のみが城壁に囲まれています。一方、ヨーロッパの城は、町全体を城壁で囲み、城郭都市を形成していました。
Features of Japanese castles / 日本の城の特徴
The symbol of Japanese castles is called “tenshukaku（天守閣）”.
日本の城のシンボルは「天守閣」と呼ばれます。
The tenshukaku is located at the core of the castle (this is called the honmaru（本丸）).
天守閣はお城の中核（これを本丸と言います）に位置しています。
The roof of the keep is called a “hafu（破風）” and has a unique configuration.

天守閣の屋根は「破風」と呼ばれ、独特な構成となっています。
The walls of Japanese castles have small holes in them called “sama（狭間）”.
日本の城の壁には、「狭間」と呼ばれる小さな穴があります。
These small holes were used to attack the enemy with bows and arrows or guns.

その小さな穴を使って、弓矢や鉄砲で敵を攻撃していました。
The foundations of Japanese castles are called “Ishigaki” (石垣), which are made of piled up stones.
また日本の城の土台は「石垣」と言い、石が積み上げられています。
Ishigaki serve as the foundation for castle defenses and buildings.

Yagura（櫓）is another feature of Japanese castles. Yagura is a modified version of a watchtower used to monitor the enemy from afar.

「櫓」も日本の城の特徴の一つです。櫓とは、遠くの敵の様子を監視するための物見台が改良されたものです。

Himeji Castle is one of the most representative castles in Japan.

Himeji Castle is registered as a World Heritage site.

Himeji Castle is characterized by its white walls painted with white plaster.

姫路城の特徴は、白の漆喰で塗られた白い城壁です。
The castle tower of Himeji Castle is a seven-story structure and is very large and beautiful.
姫路城の天守閣は７層構造となっており、とても大きく美しいです。
Himeji Castle has a gate called “Hishi-no-Mon（菱の門）,” which is decorated with a diamond pattern（菱文様）. Hishi-no-Mon” originally functioned as a Yagura.

姫路城には、「菱の門」と呼ばれる、菱の文様が施されている門があります。「菱の門」は、元々は櫓門として機能していました。
