Let’s learn Japanese along with history of tea ceremony! / 茶道の歴史を英語で解説しよう ~日本文化紹介シリーズ~

はいみなさんこんにちは。

今日は、茶道の歴史を英語で解説することを目標に、ブログを書いていこうと思います。

それではいってみましょう。

茶は12世紀に栄西という僧侶によって中国大陸からもたらされました。

Tea was brought from China by the monk Eisai in the 12th century.

brought:bring の過去形

鎌倉時代、茶は貴族や武士などの上流階級で飲まれていました。

During the Kamakura period, it was drunk among high societies such as aristocrats and samurai.

aristocrat:貴族

14世紀、「闘茶」と呼ばれる、茶のブランドをあてるゲームが流行しました。

In the 14th century, a game of guessing the brand of tea called “Tocha” became popular.

guess:推測する

15世紀、豪華なお茶会が人気となり、その際には中国から輸入された豪華な茶碗が使われました。

Until the 15th century, it was popular to have a gorgeous tea ceremony using gorgeous tea ware imported from China.

しかしながら、村田珠光という茶人が闘茶を禁止し、亭主と客との精神的交流の重要さを説きました。

However, the tea master Murata Juko banned Tocha and insisted that the spiritual exchange between the guest and the host at the tea ceremony by emphasized.

ban:禁止する

insist:主張する

exchange:交換する

emphasize:強調する

これを「侘茶」と言います。

It is said that this led to “Wabi-cha”.

その後、千利休が茶道の文化を大成させました。

After that, Sen-no-Rikyu made the tea ceremony culture a great success.

江戸時代、茶は庶民にまで広がりました。

In the Edo period, tea spread to the townspeople.

townspeople:町民、庶民

明治時代以降、茶道はひとつの芸の道として広く知れ渡ることになりました。

Since the Meiji era, the tea ceremony has become widely known as a way of performing arts.
