舞妓・芸妓とは、京都の花街において、歌や踊り、三味線などの芸で、観客を楽しませる女性を指します。
The term “maiko” or “geiko” refers to the women who entertain the audience in the kagai（花街） of Kyoto with their singing, dancing, shamisen and other arts.
舞妓とは、芸妓になる前の未成年の少女のことです。
A maiko is an underage girl before she becomes a geiko.
underage：未成年の
舞妓として約5年間修業した後、芸妓になります。
After about five years of training as a maiko, she became a geiko.
舞妓や芸妓は江戸時代、京都の八坂神社周辺のお茶屋さんでお茶を提供していた女性が起源です。
Maiko or Geiko originated in the Edo period as women who served tea in the teahouses around Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto.
舞妓姿の一番の特徴は、「だらりの帯」というベルトです。
The most distinctive feature of the maiko costume is the “darari-no-obi” belt.

このベルトは足首のあたりまで垂れ下がっています。

また、舞妓のかんざしは四季折々の花をあしらっています。
Also, the maiko’s hairpin is decorated with seasonal flowers.
舞妓の着物は色鮮やかなのに対し、芸妓の着物はシンプルな色（無地）をしています。
Maiko’s kimono is brightly colored, while Geiko’s kimono is simple in color.
