I would like to introduce you to the history of Zen.
- History of Zen in China
Zenjo is a training method to calm the mind, clarify the mind, and gain enlightenment.
This word has been around since Buddha’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.
It was the Indian bodhidharma who paid close attention to this meditation and systematized it in China.
- Eisai and Dogen
During the Kamakura period, Eisai opened Jufuku-ji and Kennin-ji temples of the Rinzai sect in Japan.
At the same time, Dogen opened Eiheiji Temple, a Soto sect, in Japan.
3, Obaku sect
Ingen Ryuki, who was born in Fujian Province, China, came to Japan during the Edo period, opened Obakusan Mampukuji Temple, and became the founder of the Obaku sect in Japan.
- Reconstruction of the Rinzai sect by Hakuin
During the Edo period, Hakuin reorganized the difficult world of “Zen”.
In addition, Hakuin changed the Japanese Zen Buddhism, which used to be centered on Nembutsu, to Zen, which was centered on Koan.
Daruma’s four scriptures
Daruma, who introduced Zen from India to China, has left four important words.
Furyumonji : Teachings cannot be conveyed in letters. The essence of enlightenment is that it cannot be expressed in letters.
Kyogebetsuden : Truth means that it is beyond the contents of the scriptures.
Jikishininshin : It is important to look at your own heart instead of looking outside.
Kenshojobutsu : To become a Buddhahood is to return to the true self. There is zazen for that awareness.
Introducing the relationship between Zen and samurai.
Zen Buddhism came to Japan from China during the Kamakura period.
It is said that the origin of the samurai was that the indigenous aristocrats and peasants armed themselves to protect their own clan and land.
The samurai who were raised by their own abilities were looking for spiritual pillars.
Zen is a teaching that trains one’s heart by one’s own discipline, which matches the spirit of the samurai forces who had a strong sense of independence.
And the samurai incorporated Zen teachings into their real life.
This is where the connection between samurai and Zen was born.
