【梅】
梅は、日本へ奈良時代に、薬用として持ち込まれました。
はじめ、梅は白い梅に限られていました。
大伴旅人は、和歌において、白梅が散る姿が雪のようであると表現しました。
平安時代になると紅梅が移入されて、紅白ともに鑑賞されるようになりました。
Ume（plum blossoms） was brought to Japan in the Nara period for medicinal purposes.
At first, the plum blossoms were limited to white plums.
In a waka poem, Ohtomo-no-Tabito described the appearance of white plum blossoms falling as if they were snow.
In the Heian period, red plum trees were introduced and both red and white plum trees came to be appreciated.

【牡丹】
牡丹が日本に渡来したのは奈良時代です。
平安時代の随筆である『枕草子』に牡丹の描写があります。
平安時代には、牡丹が神社仏閣や貴族の庭園に植えられて鑑賞されていました。
現在では、歳初めから春になるまでに、おめでたい席や特別な席で牡丹を最高の花として用います。
Botan（Peonies） were introduced to Japan in the Nara period.
There is a description of peonies in the Makura-no-soushi, an essay written in the Heian period.
In the Heian period, peonies were planted in shrines, temples, and the gardens of the nobility for appreciation.
Nowadays, peonies are used as the best flower for congratulatory and special banquets from the beginning of the year until spring.

【蓮】
平安時代になると、蓮は次第に仏教色が入ってきます。
平安時代の和歌集、「古今和歌集」には、蓮の葉の露を尊ぶ和歌が載っています。
In the Heian period, the Hasu（lotus） gradually took on a Buddhist flavor.
In Kokin-wakashu, a collection of waka poems from the Heian period, there is a waka poem that honors the dew on the lotus leaf.

【椿】
茶道では11月から4月までの約半年間、椿がよくお茶席に用いられます。
椿の木は硬いので、昔から呪力を持つ神聖なものであると信じられてきました。
In the tea ceremony, Tsubaki（camellia） is often used for tea ceremonies during the six months from November to April.
The camellia tree is hard and has long been believed to be sacred with magical powers.

【萩】
古代の書物である「万葉集」では、植物の中で萩について書かれた箇所が一番多いです。
萩は鹿や雁などと組み合わせて秋のデザインとしてよく用いられます。
In the ancient book “Man-you-shu”, there are the most passages about Hagi（bush clovers） among the plants.
Bush clovers are often used in autumn designs in combination with deer and geese.
